Approach

Increase and retain ground cover to prevent to soil loss.

Tactics

  • Ensure sufficient residual vegetation or micro-biotic soil crusts to resist wind and water erosion.
  • Minimize the risk of catastrophic fire by managing for a mosaic of smaller
  • more frequent fires and conducting fuel reduction treatments to mimic historical fire disturbance regimes (e.g. prescribed fire
  • wildland fire use
  • and mechanical fuel treatments
  • Manage to maintain or restore micro-biotic soil crusts where they are ecologically appropriate
  • recognizing soil crusts are an important soil cover.
